Privacy Policy
Effective date: May 12, 2026
FireWarning ("the app", "we", "our") is built to respect your privacy. This policy explains what data the app uses, where it goes, and what we do (or don't do) with it.
Information We Collect
FireWarning does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information to our servers. All data stays on your device.
The app uses or accesses the following data locally:
- Location (when-in-use and background). If you enable "Monitor Current Location," your GPS coordinates are used to fetch live fire data and weather conditions near you. Location is never stored persistently and is never transmitted to us.
- Saved addresses. Addresses and property names you add are stored locally on your device using iOS system storage. They are never sent to our servers.
- App preferences. Your alert settings, AQI threshold, notification preferences, and alert radii are stored locally on your device.
- Checklist progress and photos. Preparedness checklist state and home inventory photos are stored locally on your device and are never transmitted.
Third-Party Services
FireWarning sends location coordinates to third-party services to retrieve fire and weather data:
- NASA FIRMS. Your coordinates are sent to NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) to retrieve nearby fire hotspot detections from VIIRS satellite data. NASA's use of this data is governed by NASA's Privacy Policy.
- NIFC / WFIGS. Your coordinates are used to query the National Interagency Fire Center's Wildland Fire Incident Geospatial System for active named wildfire incidents. NIFC data is public domain.
- National Weather Service (NWS). Your coordinates are sent to the NWS API to retrieve fire weather alerts (Red Flag Warnings, Fire Weather Watches) and local conditions. NWS data is public domain.
- Apple WeatherKit. Your coordinates are sent to Apple's WeatherKit API to retrieve wind speed, wind direction, and relative humidity. Apple's use of this data is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
- AirNow / EPA. Your coordinates are sent to the EPA's AirNow service to retrieve current Air Quality Index (AQI) data. AirNow data is public domain.
No advertising networks, analytics SDKs, or crash-reporting tools are included in the app.
How We Use Your Information
We use information collected (via email or otherwise) only to provide support, respond to inquiries, and communicate about changes to the app or these policies. We do not sell, share, or use personal information for marketing.
Will We Share Your Information With Anyone?
We never share information with anyone.
Notifications
FireWarning delivers push notifications through Apple's Push Notification service (APNs) when fire threats are detected near your locations. The notification payload contains alert text only — no personal location data is transmitted through APNs.
International Data Transfer
Our servers are located in the United States of America. If you are accessing our app from outside the US, please be aware that data sent to third-party services (NASA, NWS, Apple WeatherKit) may be processed in the United States.
Data Retention
Because we collect no personal data on our servers, there is nothing for us to retain or delete. Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored preferences, saved locations, checklist state, and photos from your device.
Children's Privacy
FireWarning does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. The app contains no account creation or user-generated content features that would be submitted to us.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the effective date above. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
